Carol Emschwiller , author of Carmen Dog and The Mount , has published an incredible new short story over at Lightspeed . It ’s about the account - altering friendship between a young womanhood and an awkward , mysterious newcomer who moves into townspeople .
set up in a temporally - ambiguous small townsfolk after “ the depression , ” the story is secern in Emschwiller ’s characteristic style : supernumerary , poetical , and misleadingly wide-eyed . Just when she seems as if she ’s at her most wide - eyed and serious , Emschwiller will surprise you with a sharp jest . Like most of the author ’s work , this level is about the experiences of masses who have immigrated from somewhere unthinkably far off . And who must ingest – or not .
Here ’s an excerption from the opening section of “ No Time Like The Present ” :
A pot of new rich people have moved into the best houses in Ithiel Town - those big ones up on the hill that overlook the lake . What with the depression , some of those firm have been on the marketplace for a retentive meter . They ’d gotten pretty run down , but the new people all seem to have plenty of money and repair them up properly away . add docks and decks and tall fence . It was our fathers , mine include , who did all the work for them . I asked my dad what their houses were like and he enunciate , “ Just like ours only richer . ”
As far as we know , none of those multitude have jobs . It ’s as if all the family are independently affluent .
Those people look like us only not exactly . They ’re taller and skinnier and they ’re all blonds . They do n’t talk like us either . English does seem to be their native linguistic process , but it ’s an odd English . Their kids keep saying , “ Shoe pa , ” and , “ Bite the boot . ” They yell to each other to , “ Evolve ! ”
At first their clothes were funny , too - the man had weird jacket with tight waist and their pants were too short . The girl and woman actually wore longish wide skirt . They do n’t have those anymore . They must have find right aside how funny they looked compare to us , and gone to Penny ’s and got some normal dress like ours .
They kept their odd shoes , though , like they could n’t bear not to have them . ( They look really easy , they ’re kind of square and the bountiful toe is disjoined . ) And they had to await for their hair’s-breadth to maturate out some before they could get haircut like ours . This year our son have recollective pilus than the lady friend , so their son were all wrong .
Every single one of those new people , first matter , put two flamingo out on their front lawns , but then , a few days later , they wised up and took them away . It was n’t long before every single one of them had either a dog or a cat .
When Sunday came , they all went to the Unitarian church and the women wear out the most pathetic hats , but take them off as soon as they figure none of us wore any . They wear their good clothes , too , but only a few of us do .
Even though they fall to church service , Mom says I should n’t make friends with their kids until we know more about them and I specially should n’t visit any of their houses . She say the whole town does n’t trust them even though everybody has made money on them one way of life or another .
Their kids have a curious way of walking . Not that funny , actually , but as if they do n’t need anybody to talk to them , and as if they ’re practiced than we are - perchance just because they ’re grandiloquent . But we do n’t count that different . It seems as if they ’re venture we ’re not here . Or mayhap that they ’re not here . In school they eat up dejeuner together at the very farthest table and work their own food , like our cafeteria intellectual nourishment is n’t good enough . They obviously - all of them - don’t want to be here .
I ’ve bugger off one of the new hoi polloi in my class . I feel sorry for her . Marietta … Smith ? ( I ’ll look . All those young hoi polloi are Smiths and Joneses and Browns and Blacks . ) She ’s marvellous and weedy like they all are . She ’s by herself in my class ; usually there ’s two or three of them in each form . She ’s really scared . I tried to help her the first day - I guess she necessitate a girl supporter really badly - but she did n’t even smile back when I smiled directly at her .
The boy are all wondering if those new boys would be on the basketball game team , but so far they do n’t even answer when they ’re asked . Jerry ask Huxley Jones , and Huxley said , under his breath , “ Evolve , why do n’t you ? ”
worry is , my name is Smith , too , but it ’s really Smith . I ’ve always wanted to interchange it to something more complicated . I ’d rather be Karpinsky or Jesperson or Minnifee like some of the tiddler in my class .
I kind of understand those new minor . I have to eat a special dieting , and I ’m too tall , too . I hulk over most of the town boys . And I ’m an only child and I ’m not at all pop . I do n’t like what Mom says , I do n’t see what harm there can be in helping Marietta and I ’m funny . I care her odd accent . I try saying things as she does and I say , “ Shoe Dad , ” to my daddy even though I do n’t roll in the hay what those kids mean by it . Maybe it ’s really Shoo Dad .
One of these days I ’m going to sneak into her sign and see what I can find out .
