The stunt used five planes fly in formation equipped with synchronized dot - ground substance - like pot printer to slow spell out the chronological sequence . Each digit appraise almost a half - mile in height , so anyone on the ground could easily secernate the telephone number , even though the plane were flying at almost 10,000 pes .
