An international team of astronomers has observe the close black hole to Earth , locate just 1,000 light - years away . The discovery was serendipitous because they were n’t even hunt for it , they were really studying binary star and stumbled upon it .   What ’s even more exciting is it ’s the first pitch-black hole with two stellar fellow traveler that are visible to the raw eye .

The triple arrangement is known as HR6819 . As reported in the journalAstronomy & Astrophysics , the squad distinguish that one of the star in the system is in a 40 - day dancing with an invisible object estimated to be about 4.2 times the raft of the Sun , while the second star orbits further out . The mystery target must be a black muddle as no other object would create such a system without give out any light .

“ An invisible object with a mass at least 4 times that of the Sun can only be a pitch-dark hole , ” lead author ESO scientist Thomas Rivinius said in astatement . “ This system contains the near blackened hole to Earth that we bed of . ”

The find is very exciting and not just because the system is so close to us . More often than not , inglorious holes are discover while they are active . Stellar - sized black holes such as this one are usually spotted due to brawny tenner - irradiation flare released during interactions rather than when they are just passively existing . Statistically mordant holes should be very common , the end product of big supernovae that exploded a long sentence ago , so we should see more of them , if we hump what to look for .

“ There must be one C of millions of disastrous golf hole out there , but we know about only very few . Knowing what to seem for should put us in a better position to find them , ” Rivinius continued .

This system also has the potential to explain other triple system we know of , among themLB-1 , located 2,300 tripping - years away . LB-1 appears to have a minor evolved maven orbiting a very large black hole . The bootleg hole is a flake too big to have formed from a supernova ; it could have formed fromthe merger of two smaller pitch-black holes . HR6819 could be the blueprint for it .

“ We realize that another system , called LB-1 , may also be such a triple , though we ’d need more observations to say for sure , ” said Marianne Heida , a postdoctoral fellow at ESO and co - author of the paper . " LB-1 is a bit further by from Earth but still somewhat nigh in astronomical terms , so that means that probably many more of these organisation exist . By finding and consider them we can learn a lot about the constitution and evolution of those rare stars that start their life with more than about 8 times the the great unwashed of the Sun and end them in a supernova explosion that provide behind a black trap . "

HR6819 being the first stellar system with a black hole that can be view unaided is a especially exciting discovery . you’re able to see the stars for yourself in the Southern Hemisphere . They are in the configuration Telescopium and are visible in low scant pollution region .
