From paint caves to create jewellery , they are also thought to have performed rituals for their deadened . Now , archaeologists studying Neanderthal remains find in Belgiumthink they may have beenpracticing something a bit more grisly .

Bone fragments excavated over 100   class ago in the Goyet caves in central Belgiumshow evidencethat the bodies of the dead were   intentionally slaughter . The scrapes and cut marks on the 40,500 - year - old bones were   reproducible with those experience on Rangifer tarandus ivory also happen in the cave . This hint , take the investigator , that the occupants may have been eating their dead .

“ These indications allow us to arrogate that Neanderthals practiced cannibalism,”saidHervé Bocherens , who co - authored the paper published inScientific Reports . “ The many stay of horses and Rangifer tarandus found in Goyet were processed the same way . ” While the evidence clearly show that the life were removing the soma from the beat , what it ca n’t show are the reason behind this . Whether they were bump off the peel and meat strictly to eat on the idle , or whether it was actually part of some form of ritual is impossible to severalize .

grounds of these emblematic human activity have been light upon in other voice of Europe , such as in Spain , but this is the first meter evidence of   Neanderthals skin , cutting up , and removing the pearl marrow of their dead have been   found north of the Alps . Not only that , but it seems that they were also taking the clappers of the dead and fashioning them into tools . Out of 99 bone shard assessed , they witness that one thigh bone and three shin bones were used as knapping tools to regulate other stones .

The investigator were also able to execute a gross psychoanalysis of mitochondrial DNA for 10   individuals defend by the off-white fragments , doubling the total number of Neanderthals for which this has been done . Their findings sustain other one that   showed that the transmissible diversity of Neanderthals in northerly Europe was drastically reduced in the run up to them dying out .

What is also interesting is how those Neanderthals be in Goyet dealt with their dead differently to other populations in the surrounding areas . No other site in the region has found indications that Neanderthals butcher their drained ; on the opposite , they have yielded burials instead . “ The heavy difference in the behaviour of these people on the one bridge player , and the close transmitted relationship between later European Neanderthals on the other , raise many questions about the societal lives and exchange between various groups,”saidBocherens .
