Five year ago , I was broke , but I require a great camera anyhow . The Canon S90 was the pure conniption for my needs and my credit card balance . And I was n’t the only one who think so . The astonishing S90 and heir made Canon a mint — at least until Sony ’s RX100 came along with gamy quality images . With the G7 X , Canon is striking back with specs , plus a small bit of the magical spell that made Canon compact so easy to have it away in the first place .
What is it?
Basically , a juiced variant of Canon ’s S - series pocket point - and - shoot camera aimed at enthusiast camera buyers who ’ve flocked to Sony ’s RX100 instead . It ’s one of an more and more small number of cameras that take away way better pictures than your smartphone without weighing you down like a giant brick . It seem like a largerCanon S120 , which in go look almost exactly like the S90 I purchase five years ago . But now it ’s packed with a 20 - megapixel 1 - inch image sensor just like an RX100 . Besides taking wonderful photos , the G7 X offers a few features Sony does n’t , including a more various lens and touchscreen controls . At $ 700 , the Canon ’s Mary Leontyne Price sits neatly between Sony ’s $ 650RX100 IIand the $ 800RX100 III .

Design
The G7 X ’s aim does n’t mess up too much with the chemical formula Canon like an expert evolved . It ’s a sturdy black alloy blockage with a electron lens gibbosity on the front . Aside from a few shaping spots for wireless signals to pass through the flesh , it ’s an all - metallic element build .
As with my trusty S95 and the RX100 series , the customizable lens ring is the define physical trait of the television camera . The pack rotates in mouse click , rather than smoothly like a focus ring . That make it very good for changing setting , like aperture size of it , in accurate interval , but it also makes manual focal point hard to use on the fly ball . There ’s are a limited number of ascendence accessible from the camera ’s button and dials , but it ’s very much a point - and - shoot .
Where Canon ’s photographic camera like a shot ill-treat ahead of Sony is in how far its genus Lens can whizz along . The 24 - 100 mm f/1.8 - 2.8 lens give you 4.2x blowup compared to the RX100 III ’s 24 - 70 mm f/1.8 - 2.8 electron lens , which only has 2.9x optical zoom . Yet both camera are more or less the same sizing , and Canon has maintained the same wide-cut aperture . It ’s probably not enough of a departure for you to miss a picture with the Sony , but it ’s still an impressive feat of engineering by Canon .

And then there ’s the G7 X ’s beautiful and imposingly responsive capacitive touchscreen . The back panel flips up a full 90 grade for selfies , much like the RX100 III . Notably , the G7 X turn over up so swimmingly it makes the articulating designs on many other cameras palpate janky by equivalence . The downside is that the the G7 X ’s does n’t interchange down at all , so I was n’t able-bodied to well shoot from angles over my head .
The camera has a medallion - size of it design , and since the RX100 is the all - of import comparison , I ’ll remark that , yes , it ’s ever so slightly big than the RX100 . But they ’re just about as portable . Both cameras travel fine in your sack , but you ’ll feel your dungaree tweet if you end up sit on a bar stool .
For my gustation , the Canon hardware is slightly more ergonomic , in particular due to a nice pollex rest on the back . But also , the buttons on the G7 X are manner , way better . They ’re solid and pound out from the body for a squeamish firm crush . By comparison , the RX100 buttons are moneyed and squashy .

in the end , it ’s probably worth noting that while the RX100 II has a hotshoe , and the RX100 III has a built - in view finder , the G7 X has neither . I would like a hotshoe .
Using it
The G7 X feels like a dressed torpedo from the second you shoot the power push button . It get down up without choke or pause , and if your setting are ready to go it ’s firing physique or shooting video just about in a flash . It ’s faster than just about any other camera I ’ve ever used .
And this gets at why I think the G7 X is a special camera . Cramming an image sensor into a bantam package is n’t the challenge so much as wee that package something that you really want to use . The G7 X does n’t just have powerful grit , it makes you a powerful photographer by give you faster , easier controls .
After you ’ve arouse up the camera , if you ’re not on the right configurations , changing them on the G7 X is about as easy as it gets . Twin dial , a D - pad and button can cursorily get you most anywhere you ’d require to go , and I ’ve in reality always been impressed with the spry Function Set menu that pops up on Canon compass point - and - shoots . I recall it ’s quicker than the fascia on either of the current RX100 simulation .

In the event that you really need to dive deep into menus , Canon makes that well-off too : the touchscreen showing organise shoot options into just three big family you’re able to scroll through quickly rather than the sempiternal folders that tend to be favor by today ’s lineament - wad cameras .
And though I do n’t find myself using the touch shutter very often , being able to drag the focal point point around the screen to the accurate location you need is utile . And indeed , the touch screen is dainty when you just want to reach out and touch a setting to change it , instead of using arrow and buttons to scroll around . you may also employ it to silently pull focus when shooting video recording .
I do n’t have any complaint about the G7 X ’s autofocus or white Libra . Both were accurate and easy to make up for on the tent flap . In terminus of metering , I appreciated that the television camera has a consecrated exposure compensation telephone dial on the top which makes it easy to adjust for shot that are evidently too dark or too bright .

Until now , I ’ve mostly just talk to the G7 X ’s handling and ironware because that ’s a big part of what make it special . But though I ’m just amaze to it now , the camera ’s double quality is very near . The images are sharp and detailed , on equation and occasionally respectable than what I can get with an RX100 from Sony . And I was surprised how good the haphazardness bet even all the way of life up at ISO 6400 . At ISO 1600 , the photos are pretty much noiseless , and even at ISO 3200 , the exposure are excellent . At ISO 6400 , the disturbance starts to get a little consuming but even there , in a pinch , you could still use them .
ISO 3200 . Not a beautiful exposure . But it ’s noiseless !
To put that into perspective , broad daytime shooting is a piece of cake , but in a blue bar or our cavernesque office , you still can get squeamish photos . You do n’t need to promote much past ISO 3200 because the image stabilization keeps your shivering hands from blurring photos even at slow shutter speeds down to 1/15th of second .

The G7 X takes solid television , as you could see in the flying tryout below . The low - Christ Within is shot at ISO 3200 , rolling shutter is n’t too too bad , although , in the out-of-door crack you see quite a bit of aliasing overrefinement on the brick buildings . Still , it ’s edged out by the RX100 II and III . When we put them head to direct in a comparison test , they handled best in low - light .
Finally , a distinction about Wi - Fi . The tv camera ’s build - in connectivity works for easily transferring photos to your phone , assuming you ’ll ever get around to that , and I like that the tv camera remembers devices it ’s been paired for before so that it ’s quicker and easier to connect . Still , some functionality is still miss from Canon ’s CameraWindow app . For example , I can view the roll of pic that are stored on the camera from the speech sound , but I can only post them from the camera .

Like
Wonderful construction and manipulation makes the G7 X a joy to shoot with . The touch screen is a really squeamish touch sensation for a television camera this size of it . Excellent image quality on par or honest than anything else like it .
No Like
For people who want to focus manually the lens ring is n’t idealistic . No hotshoe means no flashes or other accessories you might want to use . The television quality is surpassed by the RX100 II and III .
Should I Buy It?
Yes . And that ’s saying a lot . The RX100 assembly line the camera competes with is incredible , and I would rather buy the G7 X anyhow . Mostly , this is because I wish the solidly built , well - designed computer hardware that make using the television camera a pleasure . for sure , there are some downside that might point you in another direction , like the lack of a hotshoe , and the better video tone on Sony ’s compact .
As I mentioned before , though , the G7 X is more than just a upstanding tv camera , it ’s well - design and executed to the full stop where it feels special . It apply me that satisfied tactual sensation I had all those year ago when the S90 smash exactly what I demand . Except now , it ’s a competition again .
At $ 700 this is n’t a camera for everyone . It ’s not even a camera for a casual photographer , if we ’re really lead to be honest about it . The G7 X is going to get you better exposure than your smartphone , yes , but in realness , it ’s for someone who is serious enough about their photos that they ’re going to take the time to compose them . Those who plunk down the John Cash will be reward with lovely images .
