When you think of Paul Verhoeven ’s 1987 film RoboCop , you suppose automaton . You believe sci - fi violence . You think societal commentary . You do n’t mean about a woman fly around space fight down uncollectible guy wire . But forCaptain Marvel directorsAnna Boden and Ryan Fleck , that unlikely connection was fabulously significant .
On theset of Captain Marvel last year , the directors were call for what movies were the giving influence on their picture . The tilt was eclectic : Terminator 2 , The French connexion , The Conversation . But the first one mentioned was RoboCop .
“ RoboCop is one of our bighearted 1 , ” say Boden . However , she explain Captain Marvel is n’t dark or violent like the ‘ 80s film , it ’s something else . “ What is exciting to us about RoboCop was this idea of a character who ’s finding himself and finding his past , ” she say . “ And even though it ’s a dark moving-picture show it ’s also super emotional in that room . ”
“ If you remember that scene of him walking into his own rest home and remembering those here and now from his retiring life story , think back who he was … I think that ’s big , ” Boden continued . “ That was one of the first thing we talked to Marvel about in term of this character . The estimate that self - discovery and reconnecting and rediscovering your humanity and who you were . It ’s a huge part of this film . ”
That ’s because Captain Marvel pop with Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel . She ’s got the business leader . She think she ’s Kree . Then over the course of the film , not only will it be revealed how she got those powers , she ’ll recall what life was like before that . When she was just plain former human Carol , just like RoboCop was once plain previous non - cyborg Alex Murphy .
And similar to how Murphy ’s humanity ends up becoming a part of RoboCop , the same with happens with Carol and Captain Marvel , too .
“ In the story that we ’re enjoin , [ she ’s ] a cleaning woman in the Air Force before women were reserve to fell in combat , ” Boden enounce . “ Always having to oppose … is just part of who she is . So even when she ’s passing powerful and can just shove off everybody out of the coltsfoot she still has that gist , that nerve centre of having to fight for it . ”
The directors can relate . Before let the job directing Captain Marvel , Boden and Fleck had only done very small-scale movies like Half Nelson with Ryan Gosling and Mississippi Grindwith Ryan Reynolds(Captain Marvel villainBen Mendelsohn was also in that one ) .
“ It seems dotty moving from build little movies to literally make movies with Marvel , which are the biggest pic that they make , ” Boden said . “ But it ’s actually probably the wanton transition into fix movies like this just because we ’re cultivate with so many people who are so good at their jobs . ”
That ’s not to say it did n’t take some convincing . After whole immersing themselves in the comical book history of the lineament , Boden and Fleck had to question for the movie five time . They particularly latched onto how theKelly Sue DeConnickrun handed the character , so much so that the amusing book writer was finally used as a consultant on the film . And yet , having previously address movies about small subject like teaching , baseball game , and poker , it was a little hard to convey their thinking and purpose with their own work .
“ Our movies do n’t look like we ’re like big action swot , but we are fans of action picture show , ” Fleck say . “ So [ in terms of flip ] we just put together these snip of like a great deal of our favorite motion-picture show and cut them together to music . They were like ‘ That ’s nerveless . ’ We were like ‘ Is n’t it nerveless ? Let ’s make a movie . ’ ”
And so they did . It hits theaters March 8 .
