At any give point in time , studio are juggle multiple projects in various stages of development . With some films , the path from origination to theatrical firing is a straight one . But for others , like Gambit , the route ’s … rocky . And that film has just lose its third director .
The Channing Tatum - led Gambit film has been stuck in developing hell for what seems like ages . Previously , director Rupert Wyatt and Doug Liman were attached , but fans ’ hopes were erect last class when word broke that Gore Verbinskiwas in talks to aim .
With a leading man , a script , and a director , it seemed as if Gambit might have finally been on rail to strike theater . But allot toDeadline , Verbinski too isparting ways with the projectjust as quickly as he became involved . Wyatt exited the film because of scheduling issues , while Liman left to direct Warner Bros. ’ Justice League Dark , which he then also left . Verbinski ’s reason for leave alone Gambit is also programing , since the X - Men franchise spinoff is still slated to come out on February 14 , 2019 .

Obviously , this is a rather major blow for Gambit , but it comes at a stage in time when matter are much funkier than anyone involved in the project probably ever reckon . Walter Elias Disney recentlyset plans in motion to acquire 20th Century Fox , meaning that whatever form Gambit is currently in would potentially belong to them . Unless Fox somehow manage to produce the film before the sight is finalized — it ’s still unclear how project already in apparent motion will be affected — but it seems unlikely Disney would be particularly concerned with fast - trailing a film with so small to it ( correctly now ) so as to make that impossibly penny-pinching deadline .
As utterly antic as it would be to see Channing Tatum with floppy haircloth and a Cajun accent , it ’s looking like Gambit ’s still foresightful , long ways out .
