Ever want to pack it all in , become a hobo and ride the rails ? Dusty Blackthorn ’s been doing that for the last 16 years . We caught up with the American in Guatemala and asked him how . He shared his best photos too . Do n’t be an oog .
I was sit on the side of a quite a little — really more of a volcano — in the western highland of Guatemala , pointing a television camera at material and climbing when a foreigner came into pile . Traveling with a troupe of Kaqchikel pilgrim , but sporting a shockingly white shaved head , haversack and lading trouser , he unquestionably stomach out . I must have too because he walk over and introduced himself .
Dusty was heading south through Central America , hopping shipment trains for transferral and ended up here because that ’s just where the rail took him . We rise some rock , he gave me some advice when my girlfriend got pissed at me , then we had a chat about hitching freight train .

Dusty Blackthorn : My first exposure to freight trains was in 1999 , when I found an auto rack layup in my urban center and paint my name on it . As I aim more serious about graffiti , well , the power train were always there and the more I learned about them , the more I want to get laid .
IW : Describe your first ride .
dubnium : I had a court date the next city over and no good way to get there besides my bicycle . I ’d done that 50 - mile ride a bunch of times , but it was raging and I did n’t feel like it this metre . I knew that specific train fairly well — I ’d watch it rive out of the yard a hundred times before — so I was pretty surefooted . IW : Where have you traveled ?

In Mexico , it ’s quite different . You fulfill everyone on the train . Cartel gangsters , cartel fry , 14 yr olds traveling alone to the boundary line , 80 - twelvemonth previous adult male trip alone to the boundary line , migrants work to influence the harvest , drug runner and just veritable - piece of ass folk who need a drive .
IW : Do you journey alone or with other people ?

IW : What ’s it care to photograph people on freight rate trains ?
DB : In the US , you do n’t really get the chance ; everyone is conceal . I ’m only ever photographing my Quaker there . In Mexico , thing are the exact opposition ; wide open . cap riding through town , masses wave and cops do n’t even front . I shot likely 25 people and engender reaction ranging from friendly , upstage or skittish ; which are all A OK with me . I ’ve also get outright vehemence when I photographed some corporate trust guys doing their caper .
IW : What ’s been the hairiest moment ?
DB : Both were in Mexico . Both involved raging combine guy wire . drug . Attempted murder . I ’m not extend into it further than that .
IW : This is a felony in the US , ripe ? How do you stay out of trouble ?
dubnium : In the US , you have one million Torah , give or take . It depends on which city , town , county etc they happen to kibosh the train in . penalization rank from no trouble to cock-a-hoop hassle ; it ’s best to stay on low-toned visibility .
You ’ll pass the bulk of your clip hidden . I get away with my photos because I have year of experience and know the lines like the back of my hand . In that metre , I ’ve never been arrested , but that is n’t to say that they have n’t try . I keep my shoes laced and my belt close . They ’re effective at visualize out which train you ’re on and they ’re good at block them in such a way that there is nowhere to run .
IW : What ’s dependable , traveling by freight train or hitchhiking ?
DB : I care train because you do n’t have to ask anyone ’s permit . You are n’t relying on anybody else . drive is fun and offers a lot more exemption , but you do n’t get to take in the scenery like you would on a string . Also , train go through places that roads do not . To see a lot of the landscapes I ’ve discover , one would have to mount a freight rain or walk .
IW : Is the bum life story pass ?
DB : plausibly , yes . North America is the only place that had a tramp cultivation to begin with and it ’s on the way out . Things are mystify tougher by the day . Trading crush tortilla chips for a baseball , then wreak gondola car baseball game with the local tramps while blast down a stack . make up time from stopping to offload a grainer of oregano bales into waiting pickup .
