One year after former First LadyBarbara Bushdied in her Houston home at 92, granddaughterJenna Bush Hagermarked the anniversary with a sweet and sad remembrance.
“Missing you Ganny today and everyday,” shewrote on Instagramalongside a photo of Mrs. Bush in her signature pearls.
“One year without our enforcer,” Hager, 37, continued, using one of her family’s nicknames for her grandmother.
Hager wrote that Mrs. Bush’s death — and the time that had already passed — was “hard [to] believe. You made us better and we love you more than tongue can tell.”
Mrs. Bush died just a few months before her husband, former PresidentGeorge H. W. Bush, after73 years of marriage. Their passing inspired immense public mourning.

“This Christmas, our first without Ganny, I’m nostalgic for the days when we were together,” Hager wrote. “This time of year is full of love but for those who have recently lost someone, that loss is illuminated.”

In the months since Mrs. Bush’s passing, her presence has not abated in her family. Granddaughter Barbara Pierce Bush wore a special keepsake of hers at her own wedding last October: a bracelet President Bush had given her on their anniversary.
And, Hager shared in her holiday essay, Mrs. Bush had hand-stitched stockings for great-granddaughters Mila and Poppy.
“When I imagine my Ganny, I think of her hands busy (usually her mouth too) as she meticulously needlepointed. She worked on many projects, but her most precious were stockings for her great-grandchildren,” Hager wrote.
“I thought, ‘That’s my grandmother. She’s with us, too.’ “
