The Silt Police Department in northwest Colorado is investigating an alleged physical altercation between controversial Republican Rep.Lauren Boebertand her ex-husband Jayson Boebert.

Jayson claimed to outlets includingThe Daily Beastthat he was a victim of domestic violence, saying his ex-wife “punched” him in the face multiple times at a restaurant — claims Boebert, 37, has denied.

Silt Police Chief Mike Kite confirmed to PEOPLE on Monday that law enforcement had been called over the weekend and that they were investigating the incident.

“It’s an ongoing investigation,” Kite said. “Law enforcement did respond to the Miner’s Claim [a restaurant located in Silt] on Saturday, for an incident involving Lauren and her ex-husband.”

Kite added: “Right now, we’re waiting to interview some additional witnesses and checking on some additional security footage.”

When reached for comment, a Boebert aide offered PEOPLE a statement from the congresswoman.

“This is a sad situation for all that keeps escalating and another reason I’m moving. I didn’t punch Jayson in the face and no one was arrested," Boebert said. “I will be consulting with my lawyer about the false claims he made against me and evaluate all of my legal options.”

The Colorado representative announced her separation from Jayson last March, saying in a statement issued at the time: “It is with a heavy weight on my heart that I have filed for divorce from my husband.

“I am grateful for our years of marriage together and for our beautiful children, all of whom deserve privacy and love as we work through this process,” Boebert added in the statement. “I’ve always been faithful in my marriage, and I believe strongly in marriage, which makes this announcement that much more difficult.”

According to the court documents, the process server said Jayson “was extremely angry” when served the divorce papers.

“He started yelling and using profanities, and told me that I was trespassing, and that he was calling the Sheriff’s Office,” the process server continued. “I told him I was leaving the documents on the chair outside of the door, he closed the door then let the dogs out.”
