It’s not only women who want a fuller pout – men have also been opting for lip augmentation procedures at an increasing rate.

Beverly Hills plastic surgeonDr. Tim Neavinbelievesselfieculture is to blame for the astronomical rise in male lip augmentation procedures that has occurred over the last 15 years.

“Our phones are flooded with faces,” Neavin tells PEOPLE. “Paralleling the bombardment of pictures is the desire to look good in each and every photo. Men are not immune to this temptation.”

He believes men are paying more attention to lips in particular because of the nature of self-taken photos.

“With the surge of selfies, lips have become the new staring point,” says Neavin.

As for why men are opting for more permanent procedures rather than injectibles, Neavin explains that the more invasive procedures allow for a more precise sculpting of the mouth.

“Plump lips are still in, but just as important as size is lip shape,” he says. “Fillers that augment the size of the lip have some limitations as to how much the shape can be modified.”

The most popular lip augmentation procedure among Neavin’s clients is a “lip lift,” which achieves an effect in which upper teeth are still visible with the lips parted at rest.

“In many cases, the only way to achieve this trendy look is to lift the lip,” he says. “Lip lifts can be combined with fillers to not only restore the pout, but also to reshape the lip into a more youthful, sexy look.”

Lip lifts can be performed under local anesthesia, so they have a very quick recovery time. However, be prepared to shell out a few thousand if you want to achieve a dream mouth – Neavins says the procedure can cost up to $6,000.

As for which male celebrity has the most coveted set of lips, Neavin says that’s one area where the trend hasn’t changed much in the past 15 years.

“Brad Pitt‘s lips have always been a commonly desired look for men.”
