A dog is now safe at a Maryland animal shelter after members ofthe U.S. Coast Guardfound her trapped in a shipping container in Texas on Wednesday.
In a Jan. 31 Facebook post, the U.S. Coast Guard Heartlandannounced that a team of marine inspectors from the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston was randomly inspecting shipping containers at the Port of Houston when the team heard barking and scratching from one of the stacks located high off the ground.
The inspectors lowered the noisy container, opened it, and “a dog popped out!” Per the U.S. Coast Guard Heartland, the female dog — affectionately named Connie the Container Dog — was “trapped in the container for at least a week.”
The U.S. Coast Guard Heartland described Connie’s state at her discovery as “tired, hungry, and very happy to see her rescuers.” The inspection team who found Connie gave the pup water and cuddles and then took her to the Pasadena Animal Shelter in Pasadena, Texas, for further care. According to theshelter’s Facebook post, Connie is available for adoption atForever Changed Animal Rescue (FCAR)in Maryland.

“Connie is a bit underweight and currently weighs 30lbs. She is incredibly sweet but very shy and scared of her new surroundings, as to be expected. She is heartworm-positive, and we will be getting her started on treatment ASAP. We will also be doing a full workup on her to ensure that she receives all the care she needs and deserves,” FCAR shared in a Facebook update about the dog.
The rescue israising money for its medical fundto cover Connie’s expenses.
